This isn’t funny, is it?

July 11, 2012

I woke up this morning to see the following headline:

NAACP Requires Photo I.D. to See Holder Speak in State Being Sued Over Voter ID

This particular story was reported by the ‘right leaning’ townhall.com website, and it is just another one of those headlines that The Onion used to be famous for. You know, the ones that would make you think ‘wait, what?’, then realize you had been snookered by The Onion once again.

Except The Onion isn’t involved in this.

According to the article, the NAACP was being addressed by Holder at their national convention in Houston. The press release for the event contained the following missive:

All media must present government-issued photo I.D. (such as a driver’s license) as well as valid media credentials

So, lemme get this straight. Eric Holder, the guy running our federal justice department, the guy responsible for enforcing federal laws in the United States, is speaking at the NCAAP national convention and railing against the concept of having to show any form of ID proving you are actually a legal citizen in order to vote. In order to get in to see Eric Holder rant about the audacity of the notion of showing ID in order to vote, you have to show valid ID to prove you are who you say you are. And you have to do so at a convention in a State that Eric Holder is currently suing because they are requiring you to show ID in order to vote.

So, if you don’t have any valid photo ID, you can’t see Eric Holder, but you CAN vote.

My head is spinning.
