Another government program! Yeah!

July 27, 2012

I see that today another government agency has been created that will live forever and expand to enormous proportions over the next few years until there is nobody that remembers the original intent.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is creating a new office to bolster education of African-American students.

The White House says the office will coordinate the work of communities and federal agencies to ensure that African-American youngsters are better prepared for high school, college and career.

Obama is announcing his election-year initiative Wednesday night in a speech to the civil rights group the National Urban League as he seeks to rally black voters. Aides say his executive order, to be signed Thursday, will set a goal of producing “a more effective continuum” of programs for African-American students.

Now, please don’t misunderstand me on this. Our school system sucks, especially in the more urban areas of the country, so help is needed. However, there are several HUGE issues I have here.

1. The major problem is that the quality of product our public school system produces is laughable. The amount we spend in this country per student is frightening, especially when you factor in the quality of the product. If this were the auto business, we would be spending $500,000 for a car that had bumpers glued on and no windshield. This brand new government agency is certainly not going to address this issue.

2. The reason the educational system sucks is the public-sector unions. Seniority wins out over capability, the majority of every dollar spent per student goes to pensions and benefits, not education and quality of the education is not even a factor. This brand new government agency is certainly not going to address this issue.

3. The answer is Charter Schools, where the parents have much more say in the product and the unions are out of the picture. This brand new government agency is certainly not going to address this issue.

4. We already have, at last count, seven billion government agencies focused in some way on improving the educational process for some vertical sector of the population. Certainly any one of them could have been tasked with this new need. I have to believe there is at least one of these existing agencies that doesn’t actually do anything and would welcome the work.

5. It looks like the goal of this new agency is to create more agencies. How scary is that?

I love the show Parks and Recreation, but it is a little depressing at times to realize that there are zillions of these little agencies across this great country that act this way and spend tax dollars pushing ropes in a forward direction. You have to laugh, the alternative is to go nuts.

So, thank you Mr President for creating another one. I’m sure it will get you a couple of much-needed votes, no matter what the cost.
